Perennial, with horizontal rhizome with internodes up to 1.5 cm. Stems up to 80 cm, with 1-2 (-3) basal sheaths and 2-3 cauline leaves with perfectly septate unitubulose leaf blades. Stems, sheaths and leaf blades markedly longitudinally striated and scabrous. Inflorescence with 5-20(-50) hemispherical to subspherical glomerules of (5-) 8-30 flowers each.
