Acorus calamus, the sweet calamus, is one of two species of the genus Acorus of the family Acorus acoraceae. It is commonly known as "sweet sweet sweetbriar",1 "aromatic sweetbriar" (calamus), "water sweetbriar" or "true sweetbriar", and is widely distributed in the temperate zone of the northern hemisphere, being native to Southeast Asia.
