Medium-sized tree from 10 m to 33 m, characteristic of river banks. It produces a very dense shade. Its flowers are unisexual and both sexes appear on the same tree. It has the capacity to fix atmospheric nitrogen and tolerates waterlogging well, which allows it to exist in azonal ecosystems such as peat bogs and swamps. It is a species considered a colonizer and characteristic of riparian forests.
