Plant with fibrous root, densely branched; with herbaceous stems, erect or sometimes folded at the lower nodes, 40 to 60 cm tall; leaves with membranous ligule, lanceolate blade 10 to 20 cm long and 1 cm wide, ascending and rough to the touch; the inflorescence is a racemose panicle, open, 10 to 30 cm long of hanging spikelets, supported by thin pedicels, and containing 2 to 3 florets covered by 2-3 cm long glumes with prominent green veins and with long brown hairs at the base; these glumes support, in the middle part of the back, an edge 3 to 4 cm long, bent in its middle region. The fruit is an elongated caryopsis, 6 to 8 mm long and light colored.
