Brachypodium distachyon is the only native therophyte (annual plant) of this genus, as the other four species are perennial. It rarely reaches more than 20 cm in height. Characteristic are the flattened and divergent spikelets (i.e., forming a very open angle with the stem). It has narrow leaves (usually about 4 mm). Slightly lower growing variety.
