It is a perennial herb with a branched stem reaching heights between 60 centimeters and 1.5 meters. The leaves are flat, drooping and rough with tiny hairs. The inflorescence is up to 25 centimeters long and can be open and lax or narrow and densely packed, with spikelets. Each spikelet is about half a centimeter long and purple in color.
