It is a medium to large tree, up to 20 to 35 meters. Native to eastern North America. It was a plant well known as a medicinal plant by Native Americans. It is used as an ornamental because of the yellow, red and burgundy colors of its leaves in autumn. For this color change to occur, it is necessary that the autumn is bright, cold and not chalky soils.
