Biennial plant of between 50 and 100 cm in height producing seed whose oil is extracted gamma linolenic acid (GLA) preculsor of prostaglandins. This is very active biologically in the regulation of the immune system. Original from North America and naturalized in Europe since its introduction in the 17th century.
