Herbaceous perennial of 20-100 cm, rhizomatous. Leaves with membranous ligule. Inflorescence usually formed by 3-7 spiciform racemes. Propagated by seeds and rhizomes and flowers from early summer to mid-autumn. Native to South America but naturalized in the Iberian Peninsula.
