Evergreen shrub of approximately 4 m, although occasionally it can reach up to 8 m. It grows in thickets and garrigues developed in holm oak forests, on all types of soils, associating with myrtles, kermes oaks, palmettos, aladiernos, etc. It grows as a bush and as it ages, it develops thick trunks and a large number of thick and long branches. The bark is reddish in the young branches, later it turns gray. Pinnate leaves with 6-12 dark green, leathery, lanceolate leaflets. Very small flowers, yellowish to dark red, 2-3 mm in diameter, forming tight clusters. Very aromatic fruit, red and then black, 3-4 mm in diameter.
