It is a rhizomatous perennial plant that can reach one meter in height. Its stems are erect and cylindrical, its leaves are flat and green or glaucous. The inflorescence develops in the form of a panicle with scabrous branches, usually open. Spikelets small, compressed, ovate to oblong, with 2-5 flowers. European origin but naturalized in various temperate regions.
