Deciduous shrub belonging to the rosaceae family. It is thorny and can reach a height of 4 m. It usually forms large thickets thanks to its dense reproduction by shoots that sprout from its roots. Its habitat is thorns, hedges and forest edges, also appears in clearings, banks, slopes, roadsides, preferably in limestone areas. In the Peninsula it appears in all regions although it is scarcer in the south and Balearic Islands.

'-Estratification in moist sand or peat at 4-6º C for 3-4 months before planting in spring.
-Cold stratification at 1º C for 16 weeks. Warm stratification at 20º C for 3 weeks, then cold stratification at 2-7º C for 6 months.
-Stratification at 20°C for 2 weeks, then cold stratification at 3°C for a variable period of 2-6 weeks, then 25°C for another 2 weeks and finally at 3°C for 30 weeks.
-Soaking overnight, followed by wet stratification at 25-30°C for 4-6 days. Move to 2º C in darkness for 11-12 weeks. Slowly increase Tª and light levels.'
