Evergreen tree about 10 m high. Its crown is wide, dense and rounded, the flowers are unisexual and are arranged on the tree itself, being not very showy. The holm oak lives well in poor, calcareous and alkaline soils and requires cold winters and hot, dry summers. It is found in the Mediterranean region, reaching northern Spain, western France and southern Great Britain.
