Shrub or small thorny sapling that can reach 8 m in height. The trunk and branches are twisted and the bark darkens over the years. The leaves are simple, deciduous, usually opposite, broadly ovate and slightly toothed margin. The flowers are yellowish green, not very showy and its odor is not pleasant. It grows in calcareous, loose and humid soils, never in waterlogged clay.
