It is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant depending on the climate of the area. Its stems are quadrangular fruiting stems that grow branched from the base, reaching a total height between 20 to 100 centimeters depending on the variety. Its green leaves grow oppositely and are ovate-acuminate, sub-heart-shaped of a size 7 by 5 centimeters that maintain their serrated margin. It flowers from mid-spring to full autumn, with flowers gathered in erect terminal spikes that sprout from the center of the plant and are long-lasting, characterized by a calyx and bracts intensely colored like its corolla.
