They are usually very branched trees or shrubs, whose leaves are shaped like scales and are arranged around the twigs like the shingles of a roof. In addition, they have the ability to secrete salts from the substrate by means of small glands shaped like papillae. The flowers are small, but are very showy because they come out in numerous and elongated clusters, white, cream or pink. They are also very aromatic and melliferous.
