It is a small plant with a climbing habit that reaches at least 15 cm in height, with flowers of 15 mm in diameter. It grows in low grasslands, in acid or neutral soils. It accepts half shade. Flowers boreally from April to September. The flowers can be purple, blue, yellow or white. It is hermaphrodite and self-fertile and is pollinated by bees.
