Washingtonia filifera

desert fan

SC00714

Its main differentiating characteristics with respect to the genus Phoenix is that they have palmate leaves (i.e., the leaflets emerge radially from the same point at the end of the petiole, instead of being arranged along the rachis like the beards of a feather) and the trunk is much thinner and taller (more than 15 meters). The trunk has small marks of rough fissures or is partially covered by leaf debris, its base is broadened. It has an elliptical or ovoid, blackish fruit of 0.6 cm in diameter. The ideal conditions are hot summers, but in winter it has a relative resistance to cold, as it can withstand short frosts of up to 10 degrees below zero.
