They are shrubby or arboreal palms, dioecious, with the trunk covered by the bases of the spirally arranged leaves. The latter are pinnate, marcescent with petiole generally short, elongated rachis and simple leaflets, aligned or arranged in groups, the basal ones transformed into thorns.
