Scirpus holoschoenus

churrero reed

SC00213

Perennial plant with a circular section stem, devoid of leaves; these have been reduced to sheaths located at the base, which when aged leave a fibrous reticulum. Cyperaceae lack obvious petals or sepals, but the stamens and styles, which are separate in most species, are surrounded by a small scale called glume, important for identification. The inflorescence is lateral, formed by globose heads grouping numerous spikelets of 2.5-4 mm. The glumes are ciliate on the edge and keel. The fruit is a brownish capsule. It flowers between spring and summer.
