Tagetes lucida is an erect perennial herb up to 80 cm high, very aromatic to anise when squeezed. It has glabrous stems more or less branched from the base. The leaves are entire, sessile, linear to oblanceolate, with serrated margin and acute to rounded apex. The heads are grouped in corymbs. Involucre cylindrical, 4 to 12 mm high. Yellow flowers, 3 or 4 ligulate, disk 5 to 8. The fruit is a blackish linear-claviform cypsela, with a pappus of two aristiform scales.
