Very cespitose herbaceous perennial plant, with a rhizome from which arise erect, cylindrical stems, 20 to 90 cm high. It inhabits permanently nitrified and humid meadows and reedbeds, typical of swampy soils and riverbeds. It occurs in Europe, Africa and southwest Asia. In the Peninsula it is abundant throughout the territory.
