It is an annual herbaceous plant that can measure between 10-70 cm in height with a branched stem. The basal leaves are 3-5 cm long and petiolate. The flowers, red or yellow, are 15-35 mm in diameter, with a dark or black center and black anthers. The fruit in cylindrical raceme of many achenes, each with a transverse wrinkle and two protuberances on the inner margin.
