Perennial herbaceous, up to 1m high, very cespitose, with a short rhizome from which erect stems arise, cylindrical in section or somewhat compressed. It is found in very humid hygrophytic meadows-juncales of Europe, Asia, North Africa and North America. It appears in almost all the Iberian Peninsula, being more frequent in the coastal regions.
