It is a plant with cespitose rhizome, with numerous stems; without stolons or with very short stolons. Stems 25-60 (-70) cm, slender, trigonous. Leaves 2-3 mm wide, usually shorter than the stem, dark green, with triangular ligule as long as wide. Inflorescence 3-7 (-12) cm, cylindrical, lax, very discontinuous. Lower bract setaceous, sometimes absent. Spikelets ovoid or subglobose, androgynous, with male flowers at the top, dense. Glumes of female flowers ovate, aristate, with scabrid midrib. Utricles 3.5-4.5 mm, ovate-elliptic, with weakly marked veining; beak scabrid and bifid. Style with 2 stylar arms. Flowers from March to June.
