It is a tree of medium size occasionally large. The bark is persistent on the trunk and large branches, hard and deeply furrowed, dark gray to black, with the upper branches smooth and whitish. Adult leaves are pedunculate, lanceolate, 14 x 1.8 cm, sub-glaucous or dull green. Flowers are white, pink, red, or pale yellow and appear from early fall to mid-spring.
