toad reed

SC00142

This herbaceous plant has an annual cycle, therefore, unlike the perennial sedges, it is very small, about 10 cm high. The stems and leaves have a reddish base and sometimes the whole plant takes on this color. It is very branched, erect or partially lying forming sparse lawns. It grows in almost permanently flooded areas. It is distributed in many continents including Europe, and in Spain it is found in the Mediterranean region.
