It grows up to 9-15 meters in height, exceptionally it can reach 25 meters. The leaves are deciduous, pinnate, 20-25 cm long with 10 or 12 leaves without the terminal leaf. The flowers are produced in panicles 15-20 cm long at the end of the branches with separation into male and female plants. The fruit is a small red drupe containing a single seed. It grows in sunny areas and does not tolerate shade, it is the most frost tolerant of the species, tolerating up to -25 °C.
