Deciduous tree, sometimes shrubby, 3 to 6 m high, very branched and somewhat thorny. Its fruit is the pomegranate. Native from the Balkans to the Himalayas; it has naturalized in the Mediterranean area and has been introduced in South America, South Africa and Australia. It is considered one of the most cultivated fruit trees.
