This species produces triangular stems in clusters, reaching 100 to 120 centimeters in height from short rhizomes. The inflorescence is up to 35 centimeters long and has a long bract longer than the spike. It is a cluster of several cylindrical spikes. The fruits are conical with long, slender aristae.
