Cypress seed germinates well without any pre-treatment or by simply soaking it before sowing for 24-48 hours.
However, there are some batches of seeds that germinate very slowly, due to internal dormancy, so it is convenient to stratify the seed in moist sand for 30-60 days at a temperature of 4ºC.
The stratified seed germinates faster and in greater proportion than the seed not previously stratified. Apart from the possibility that the seed presents internal lethargy, there is the circumstance that this seed presents a high number of empty or sterile seeds (40-70%).
