Perennial plant, 20 to 80 cm high, provided with a thick rhizome and stem aphylous, simple robust and circular section. Leaves reduced to one or two sheaths at the base of the stem. Terminal spikelets brown and oblong, 20-30 flowers. Two basal glumes surrounding the spikelet. Two stigmas. Yellowish, smooth achene fruit. Flowers in spring and summer.
