It is a perennial species, occasionally annual, of the genus Eragrostis of the family Poaceae that can reach up to 2 m in height. It is used as pasture and fodder for livestock. It is native to south-east Africa, although it is naturalized in Argentina, Australia and the southern United States. In Spain it can be found in the Canary Islands.
