It is a deciduous tree of 20 to 35 meters, and is easily distinguished from other Fraxinus species by its black buds, instead of the usual brown ones. It is used as firewood and for handles for tools such as tennis rackets.

Technical Information

Planting information:

Stratification for 2 to 3 months at 15/20º C and 3-4 months at 4/5º C. Days to germination from 2 to 3.

The most successful germination involves a combination of hot-cold stratification. The warm period consists of stratification at daytime temperature (20-30°C) for 1-3 months, followed by cold stratification at 5°C for 2-3 months.
