Tree that reaches up to 25 m and the crown is more elongated and less dense. The leaves are generally lanceolate or elliptic, up to 9 cm long. The margin is usually toothed or entire and they are rarely prickly. Its leaves are persistent, alternate, with dark green upper side and underside covered with a dense whitish tomentum, velvety in appearance. The flowers are born in spring grouped in hanging twigs (catkins) of yellow-ochre color, and its fruits (acorns) can be sweet or bitter.
