Medium-sized, deciduous tree, growing up to 20 m tall, with a trunk up to 1 m in diameter. The leaves are bright green, turning yellow, red and orange in autumn. The bark is gray and pink. Small yellow flowers that open before the leaves appear. It prefers limestone soils and needs a minimum of humidity in summer.
