The fan palm is one of the most cold hardy palms, easily recognized by its very hairy trunk. The leaves, in an abundant terminal tuft, are dark green and shiny on the reverse, clear and ashy on the underside. It has a solitary stipe, unbranched and without stems at its base, 10-15 m high, with leaf petioles little or no thorns. Flowers in clusters, of a beautiful bright yellow color, and bluish-gray fruits, the size of a pea.
