El palmito elevado es una de las palmeras más resistentes al frío, fácilmente reconocible por su tronco muy peludo. Las hojas, en un abundante penacho terminal, son de color verde oscuro y brillantes por su revers , claras y cenicientas por el envés. Tiene un estípite solitario, no ramificado y sin vástagos en su base, de 10-15 m de altura, con pecíolos foliares poco o nada espinosos. Flores en racimos, de un bello color amarillo vivo, y frutos gris azulado, del tamaño de un guisante.
