Herbaceous perennial herbaceous cespitose that reaches up to 1.50 m and in tropical climates, in the Canary Islands, produces dense panicles when flowering forming clusters of spikelets of 30-60. The leaves are very aromatic and elongated. It does not thrive in compact soils nor in soils where water stagnates or in very dry soils.
