Sabal causiarum is a palm with a solitary, very strong stem, reaching a size of up to 10 meters in height and 35-70 centimeters in diameter. The plants have 20-30 leaves, each with 60-120 leaflets. The inflorescences are branched, arching or pendulous, longer than the leaves, and globose with black fruits. The fruits are 0.7-1. centimeters in diameter, the size and shape of the fruit are the main characteristics by which this species differs from Sabal domingensis. The palma cana has the particularity that its leaves dry and remain attached to its trunk. This process is called marcesencia. Hence, they serve as shelter for various insects and especially for birds that take it as a nest.
