It is a densely caespitose herbaceous perennial that reaches its maximum height (1.5 m) if found in a humid area. It is used in environmental restoration in wet meadows and marshy areas, near water. Widely distributed throughout Europe, in the Iberian Peninsula it is found in the Pyrenees and in mountain areas.
