It grows climbing up to 1-2 m high. Leaves ovate, pinnate with two leaflets and a terminal tendril, becoming curled on supporting plants; intense green, fragrant flowers and occur solitary, 2-3.5 cm wide, purple in the wild plant, larger and very variable in color in the many cultivars.
